With several MBTA lines and major roadways, Mattapan Square serves several neighboring communities but access is constrained by congestion and limited economic activity. Planners Collaborative, as part of a team, identified two areas in which accessibility can be enhanced, including improved connections to downtown Boston and increased access to Mattapan’s commercial districts. These efforts were conducted in support of the BRA’s Mattapan Economic Development Initiative whose purpose is to implement a planning process to define opportunities for actions to improve the economic well-being of this neighborhood. The initiative is intended to respond to the economic, land use, streetscape and transportation realities, and community goals of Mattapan.
