The MBTA’s Fairmount Corridor Improvement Project represents an upgrade to a commuter rail line to produce a service level that is comparable to rapid transit. When completed, it will significantly improve downtown access for Dorchester, one of Boston’s most transit-dependent neighborhoods. The MBTA’s plan includes the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Uphams Corner and Morton Street stations and the construction of up to four new stations along the corridor. Also included are the reconstruction and rehabilitation of existing bridges that span the rail right of way, construction of a new interlocking, and upgrade of the existing signal system.
