Planners Collaborative studied the projects being implemented by U.S. transit agencies across the nation involving Communications Based Train Control (CBTC). These studies were designed to assess safety, cost-effectiveness, and the applicability of CBTC technology to other transit systems. The Planners Collaborative team examined four CBTC projects in order to compare alternative approaches to the technology in San Francisco, New York, and Philadelphia. As a result of this thorough study, San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has made plans to fully exploit CBTC, and has already taken action to capture secondary benefits such as electric power use management.
