Planners Collaborative’s study for the Transit Cooperative Research Program through the Transportation Research Board determined that coordination of specialized transportation services for the disabled has two primary benefits: costs can be lowered and resources can be redeployed to individuals with more expertise in service delivery. Planners Collaborative researched current legislation and programs that set the framework for coordination, interviewed state and local officials who operate, fund, or oversee the coordination of transportation programs, and conducted case studies of locally coordinated systems to identify the characteristics that make them successful.
